Rude Awakening!

Well, I guess I wasn't paying attention when they announced the new postal rates.  I knew stamps were going up a penny, but I didn't know overseas postage was doubling!  I took my international Easter cards to the post office today & about had a heart attack!  My card-making friends are important to me, but over $6 for a card is just too much!  Guess I will take them apart or add a sheet to the inside so I can cover up what I had written & give them to state-side friends.  Then I have to figure out thinner cards to go overseas.  Just when I thought they might not be late!
On to today's card which is for the Impression Obsession challenge to make a card using a favorite technique. I chose resist distress & dry embossing using IO's Easter Eggs, MC121 clear set.  I've been wanting to use my new VersaMagic colors: Pink Grapefruit, Key Lime & Turquoise Gem.  The dry embossed piece is made with Spellbinders Reverse Wonky Rectangles & PTI Take Three.  I love the shape of the McGill Pine Branch punch, but boy was it hard to push!  Not sure it really goes with Easter eggs, but that's the nice thing when you're the designer--LOL! The sentiment from the same set is stamped in Versafine Smokey Gray & embossed with clear ep on vellum die cut with Spellbinders Labels 10 (2 layers).  Better get to work on those thin cards & I know you have lots of blogs to visit--thanks for taking time to stop at mine.

  2. The egg colors are beautiful with the white! Yikes on the postage! It has got almost to expensive to mail something. I used that punch at Archivers and I could not get it to punch! Need to work out more!

  3. I remember hearing, when the prices first went up, that international rates were actually going up 60%! Isn't that CRAZY!? I agree that we'll now have to make sure our overseas cards are flat and one layer - so sad!

Love your card, Greta! The embossing, branches and vellum are all wonderful touches and I love those pretty, pastel eggs!

  5. Wow! Greta, that postage is outrageous!!! But your card is wonderful. I love the techniques and how your eggs turned out! Lovely Easter card. Thanks for playing and good luck in the drawing too!!

You could just fold white cardstock and tape the card fronts to that on the ones you were going to mail.

  6. WOW... I didn't realise it was that bad till I looked at some ribbon on Amazon. 2 rolls at $8.95 each and then postage was going to be $58 postage to NZ!!!! Of course I cancelled the order super quick....
    Your card is so pretty ~ the colours on your eggs are sonderfu;

  7. Oh I feel for ya with the postage, Greta. That's why I'm all about "mailable". See it as a challenge to get such beautiful elements into a one or max two layer beauty...

  8. I hear you on the postage hike, Greta! I mailed a completely flat card weighing less than one-third ounce to Canada this week and that alone cost $1.10. I can't imagine what an embellished card would cost to mail! Sorry it all caught you off guard :-(. I never would have guessed the rates had gone that high. I do love your beautiful Easter egg card, though! Thanks for brightening my morning :-)

  9. Wow, that postage is a killer Greta! It's funny that they want people to mail things rather than use email, but the overseas, (and to Canada), postage is so high, who can afford it? I guess it's a vicious cycle, the PO needs money and volume, but the higher the rates, the less volume they will get.

I really love those eggs, they almost look like tapestry!

I agree about the McGill punches being hard to push. I have a few of them, and they are all that way. I'm still glad I have that one though, it's bigger than the MS one, and it's nice to have both sizes.

  10. I can't believe the PO is going broke with those prices! Must be something about the pensions...oh, shoot my brother is a postman, so I better be quiet. Nice card-like your eggs and thanks for keeping my family eating...

  11. Can't believe it that it cost you $6 for a card! Bad for us too as we need to pay a ton for overseas order to buy our stamps!

    Fun Easter card, Greta!

  13. Such pretty Easter card; love the colours! The postage prices are a concern! I live in 'small town Canada' and rely almost exclusively on shopping on-line. When shipping rates cost more (or sometimes even double!) what I've ordered, the 'cancel' button is pushed quickly. Some companies have found ways (or have 'made' ways) of remaining reasonable (Paper Smooches and The Alley Way Stamps come to mind) - so thankful, since I love their products. Perhaps the high rates are a way for me to 'save' money (a good thing, but I *like* my happy mail!!).
    Thanks for sharing!!

  15. Lovely embossed eggs Greta, I know what you mean about postage costs, I sent my brother 6 mince pies at Christmas to the USA they only cost about $3 but the shipping of them was $18, it is such a shame that it costs so much to send stuff across the pond, hope you get your thinner cards done in time!
